IDC4O - Production
Production
The concept of production is to take the "raw" results from camera, audio, and other artistic sources to make the overall product appealing to an audience...
We can program the MicroBit (left) to carry out the basic mechanics of a video game, but it leaves much to the imagination. The glowing dots can be programmed to move around, detect collision, and register some type of penalty or reward, but identifying what character they represent is not as clear as the animation on the right. Since the early days of video games, realistic images have been the primary selling point. However, there is more to a good game than the simple mechanics of it...

Music
Music adds so much to entertainment. If you ever experience a scary movie, mute the sound and you will find that the movie is not nearly as scary anymore. Matching the right music with the game can make the game more entertaining and certainly affect the mood of the game.

StorylineVideo games have come a long way in the last 40 years. The production has extended far beyond the graphics within the game. For decades, actors have been hired to create a story-line in order to set a context for the game. The Command and Conquer intro video (right) is almost 30 years old.
Adding a storyline gives a sense of meaning to the game you are playing. |

Photo Production
A video is just a sequence of still photographs (frames) shown consecutively (one after the other) at a high speed (usually measured in frames per second). Therefore, video editing should start with an understanding of editing individual pictures. Many concepts can be demonstrated in software that is already installed - Microsoft Paint and Paint 3D.

Audio Production
Animation
Animation is the process of drawing a series of pictures to be played back in sequence that will depict motion. This is different from a video which uses a camera to take a series of pictures.
The pac-man character shown (left) was created in Microsoft Paint. It has 3 different images shown in a cycle of 4 frames to give the appearance of motion. The Visual Basic code (right) is virtually all that is needed to display the appropriate image every time the clock ticks. Note: you are not expected to know Visual Basic, or how to code the animation. |
Private Sub Timer1_Tick(sender As Object, e As EventArgs) Handles Timer1.Tick
counter = counter + 1 If counter > 3 Then counter = 0 End If If counter = 0 Then Button1.Image = Button2.Image ElseIf counter = 1 Then Button1.Image = Button3.Image ElseIf counter = 2 Then Button1.Image = Button4.Image Else Button1.Image = Button3.Image End If End Sub |
Video Production
Video production brings together the photo and audio production to create a video that looks professional and can be shown to a public audience.
